Not a New Year's resolution/No es una resolución de Año Nuevo

I will include in my weekly schedule at least one hour to blog.  Not a resolution, just an idea for the changes in my schedule that I have to do for the new year, anyway (ok, it is a resolution...)

Type A and Type B people / Gente "Tipo A" y "Tipo B"

This is an idea I been juggling with for some time now, but it is the first time that I try to write it down. Here it is:

The humanity could be divided in two types of people. Those who go about their lives according to how things should be ("Type A"), and those who go about their lives according to how things really are ("Type B"). I am (almost) convinced (getting there) that when you see an accident, most of the time there was a "Type A" person involved in any way. I am also almost certain that the biggest failures in history have involved one of these guys.

On the other hand, "Type B" people could be seen as the conformists. I guess some are and some are not. My other theory is that great leaders, and the most accomplished people in history are non-conformist, "Type B" people.
__________

(Mayúsculas a propósito)
Recuperation of the urban space t

Punto.

The way I see it, recuperation of urban space through Art refers to an interaction (friendly or intellectual) between the artist and the community. Period.

As soon as government or politicians negociate with this interaction (by organizing and deciding who, what, where, when), it turns into a different thing: it feels more like the conquest of the urban space. Think Spaniards arriving in America, with little mirrors to impress the natives. "Here we come to mark this territory as ours, and we are paying artists to do whatever we think you, the habitants of this neighborhood, should like" ("We, the masters of taste").

I think that the role of the government and politicians in this issue should be to "lubricate", or facilitate, and observe. They should make sure that in the process and in the final product, nobody´s rights are violated. The rest of BS.

The "Political Spectacle" element in spectacles – El elemento de "Espectáculo Político" en los espectáculos

spec.ta.cle: an event or scene regarded in terms of its visual impact (Oxford American Dictionaries) (Mi traducción: un evento o escena apreciada por su impacto visual)

My translation: thing to be seen or offered for intellectual contemplation and is capable of calling the attention and move the mood, instilling enjoyment, surprise, pain and other more or less alive and noble feelings – Spanish Language Royal Academy)

Mi intension is not to make comparisons between the videos that I show in this post. The ideological content of each is completely different (and one of them I don't endorse, of course). What I am trying to point out is the process of how an arts spectacle turned into a political tool ("political spectacle"), and how later this tool was taken back by arts organizations to help them remain sustainable.

This is the way I picture how all this came to happen: A politician notices how the audience reacts to a symphony orchestra. He thinks "I should make use of this spectacle to reach the people".

He then realizes that the conductor and the orchestra members studied and rehearsed every note, every gesture, every nuance. He thinks "I should do the same: study and rehearse every word, every gesture and every voice inflection".

I would dare to say that this is one of the earliest examples of an spectacle per se used so intentionally and obviously as part of a a political spectacle: Furtwangler conducting Wagner's The Meistersingers Overture in some German factory.

Now this is an organization taking the political spectacle tool back to an arts organization:

José Antonio Abreu has been a master in using political spectacle to promote and make the Venezuela Orchestra system soar locally and internationally.

I think I've fallen short on this subject in this post. I hope I'll continue thinking and writing about this.

Craigslist.org, y el poder de las redes comunitarias (...and the power of community networks)

(If you speak english, you probably know all about craigslist.org. The above text is to try to explain it to my Spanish speaking readers)

In the last few days I've started a campaign to present a network organizational model (as opposed to a pyramid shaped model) for the Guatemalan Orchestra System promoted by the "Music and Youth" Foundation. I think it makes a lot of sense (not my idea, as is the theme of this blog):

"...[t]he deal is that organizations which spread out, which spread out power among lots of people [...] are more resilient, they are more robust, [...] if you cut the head of a centralized organization, they are dead. But if the organization is a network, and has a lot of heads, [you] can't kill it"

Opera in/en Guatemala

Ok, lots of Opera all of the sudden, great. Do we really want to see it? (at least this many times?)

Ok, mucha Opera de repente, magnífico. De verdad queremos verla? (al menos verla tantas veces?)

"L'Elisir d'Amore" last night gave me the impression that the market is saturated. Too much offer, not that much demand. Less that half of the seats were filled. I'm not sure many people will come tonight either (the second and last show).

On top of everything (and everyone show face it): La Ermita is not a concert venue, much less an Opera venue. Sound sucks and it will always do, no matter what you do. Plus it is far, and cold, and damp. The novelty of its charm is gone. We know how it looks, but no matter what Opera they present, it will always be La Ermita on the background of Verdi, Puccini or Donizetti. Get over it people!!!

I believe in market economy. So soon we should have enough Operas to satisfy the demand. Unless some presenters keep using it to get tax benefits, using a phony mission of benefiting the arts in Guatemala, presenting expensive shows with houses less than half full (ridiculous!) People have to remember that presenting arts is not only to benefit the artists and the producers, but the audience, too.

"Atol con el dedo", or "Feeding Tomato Soup with the Finger"

"The Soprano is Russian, and the violins are electric": This is the type of sound bites I heard for promoting the biennial IX Paiz Arts Festival, in Antigua Guatemala (don't bother trying their website's english version, it's empty).

Well, it is understandable that artistic integrity is compromised in one of the major arts festivals in Guatemala, where your social status is measured by the size of the brand label on the clothes you wear (as in "How big is you Banana Republic?"). Many arts events are still organized as oportunities to show off (even by presenters, in this case: the Paiz Foundation).

Needless to say: the soprano turned out to be 3rd class-ish, the conductor got lost more than once very obviously. But because he talked to the audience in English (he is British) and she is Russian, they got a standing ovation (Bravi to the people that walked out in the middle of that concert!!)

I'm not going anywhere near the electric violins. Hopefully in two years, the Paiz Foundation will go back to the idea that is more about the arts and less about social status or getting tax breaks for a supermarket chain.
